The scientific research work carried out by the institute is aimed at solving the following problems of the road industry:
For the experimental study of the water-thermal regime of roads during 2020-2021, “KazdorNII” JSC equipped 28 measuring stations equipped with temperature and humidity sensors, operating in automatic mode and located relatively evenly throughout the Republic. The practical value of the work lies in the fact that it allows you to get a real picture of freezing and thawing of road structures of roads, experimentally, covering as much as possible all the regional features of Kazakhstan. The received information is processed in order to take into account the results in the design of the subgrade and pavement.
Regionalization of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been developed according to the requirements for bituminous binders, taking into account the operational temperatures of the pavement.
Compositions of asphalt concrete mixtures with increased temperature stability, strength and durability are being developed.
With the use of new technologies and innovative solutions developed by “KazdorNII” JSC, 177 sections were built on roads of international, republican and local significance, including: with different types of asphalt concrete - 92, with impregnant compositions - 24, with geosynthetic materials - 12 , with repair compounds for cement concrete pavement - 16, with protective layers - 18, etc.
To improve the transport and operational characteristics, as well as improve the adhesive properties in the preparation of asphalt concrete mixtures, the use of adhesive additives in their composition, as well as the use of polymers in crushed stone-mastic and polymer-mastic asphalt concrete, is widely used in the practice of construction and repair of roads.
Various impregnant compositions are widely used to ensure the sealing of asphalt concrete pavement during current repairs. Geosynthetic materials are used to ensure soil stabilization, drainage, reinforcement of layers and interlayers of structural layers of pavement. To improve better adhesion to the surface of the pavement, its tightness, thin layers of wear are used (microsurface is a polymer-bitumen emulsion, which is selected taking into account not only climatic, but also weather conditions at the time of work).
Currently, nanotechnologies are being actively introduced in the road industry. An installation for the production of nanopowder from Kazakh coal has been created. The addition of nanocarbon powder makes it possible to obtain modified bitumen and asphalt concrete with improved strength and performance characteristics. The result of the introduction of carbon modifiers into the asphalt concrete mixture is an improvement in strength and elasticity, an increase in water resistance and frost resistance of road composites.
A technology has been developed to obtain compounded (liquefied) and modified bitumen, the use of which, at real facilities in the country, will significantly improve the quality of constructed and repaired roads, thereby increasing the technical, social and economic potential of the country. Bitumen plants can, using this product, produce road bitumen of improved quality that meets the requirements of the climatic conditions of the regions of Kazakhstan.
The use of soil stabilizers, which can be ionic, chemical and polymeric, and can be used in combination with or without skeletal additives in soil mixtures, has been tested by more than 10 domestic and foreign manufacturers. The list of approved stabilizers is constantly growing and being updated. Stabilizers solve the issue of reducing the use of cement by 2-3%, a stabilizer such as Scrapton allows you to work without the use of cement. Soil stabilizers provide a significant improvement in the crack resistance of the soil, giving it the required strength, water and frost resistance.
Soil stabilization technology has been successfully tested and implemented in the practice of road construction, with various additives built from 10 to 500 km of roads in different regions of Kazakhstan. On average, costs are reduced by 15-20%, and overhaul periods are increased by 2-3 years.
The use of rubber crumb, which is a product of recycling used tires and car tires with special components from TecRoad (Austria), SAS CR (RK), ARP (RK), KMA (RF), solves environmental issues of recycling and noise reduction by 4-8 dB. According to the studies carried out at “KazdorNII” JSC - the use of rubber asphalt concrete allows to increase the strength characteristics from 20% to 40%; resistance to rutting from 1.5 to 4 times; resistance to cracking up to 20%. The economic efficiency of coatings, other things being equal, is achieved with the overhaul service life of rubber-asphalt concrete pavement, which is 1–1.5 years longer than that of traditional hot asphalt concrete pavement.
Research is being carried out on the technology of preparation and use of warm asphalt mixes in order to reduce energy consumption and improve the environmental situation.
Recommendations have been developed:
R RK 218-129-2016 Album of rational pavement designs, taking into account natural and climatic conditions and road categories.
The album contains pavement designs for motor roads of I, II, III, IV, V technical categories in III, IV, V road-climatic zones (according to the current road-climatic zoning) taking into account the requirements of R RK 218-96-2013 “Zoning territory of Kazakhstan according to the design temperatures of asphalt concrete pavements”. When developing an album of rational pavement designs, climatic conditions, traffic loads and test results of bitumen, polymer-modified bitumen, asphalt concrete and polymer asphalt concrete, reinforced bases and a working layer of subgrade were taken into account.
The recommendations provide the basic designs of pavement for local roads of III, IV and V categories. For traffic intensities from 1000 to 2000 vehicles/day and from 2000 to 3000 vehicles/day (III category) and from 100 to 500 vehicles/day and from 500 to 1000 vehicles/day (IV category), the basic structures are presented separately.
An analysis of the reasons for the formation of defects is performed. Various innovative materials and technologies are being tested on cement concrete pavements. The Institute has tested: impregnating-protective composition “STROP” (Kazakhstan); mastic of the Biguma “TL-82” and “Arctic” series, protective layer, wear type “Microsurface”, Sealant “MASTERFLEX 472”, porous-mastic asphalt mix (PMA10), impregnating compound “PAVIX CCC100” (USA), silicone sealants “Crafco Road Saver”, etc.
New structures and materials (polyurethane) for supporting parts of superstructures of increased durability have been developed and recommended for wide implementation and application in projects.
Typical designs of round and arched corrugated metal culverts and recommendations for their design and construction on highways have been developed.
Recommendations have been developed on the arrangement of interfaces for road bridges, overpasses and artificial structures with an approach embankment”; and recommendations on the use of various interface structures for bridges, overpasses and artificial structures with an embankment, depending on engineering-geological and natural-climatic conditions.
