Kazakhstan adopts European experience to improve road safety

“KazdorNII” plans to implement the principles of zero tolerance to road fatalities.

Kazakhstan is making consistent steps towards the realization of Vision Zero - an international concept based on the principle of zero tolerance to road fatalities and providing for the design of a safe urban environment. For example, currently KazdorNII specialists are undergoing training on road safety and implementation of Vision Zero in Swedish National Road Consulting AB (Stockholm, Sweden).

Making our roads truly safe is one of the priority goals of KazdorNII. As history shows, studying international experience and applying practices used in progressive countries plays an important role in solving this task.

In recent years, special attention has been paid to the states of Europe. Many countries of the Old World are famous for comfortable and safe roads. The Netherlands, Sweden, Great Britain, Ireland, Norway, Finland, Denmark traditionally have the lowest rates of road traffic fatalities. Kazakhstan, as a rule, is somewhere in the middle in such ratings, overtaking most of the African and Latin American countries, but seriously yielding to “Europeans” and “progressive Asians”.

It is worth noting that Sweden is among the top five countries in the world with the safest traffic. It was the Vision Zero program that formed the basis of the Swedes' fight against potential accidents and their consequences. The parliament of the Scandinavian state adopted the program back in 1997, after which other countries (UK, USA, Canada, Netherlands, etc.) began to adopt the Swedish experience.

Earlier KazdorNII signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Czech Center for Transport Research (CDV). The institute's partnership with Eastern European specialists will allow domestic highway engineers to directly obtain advanced knowledge and practical skills.

The issue of highway safety should be approached comprehensively. Thus, at the end of last year it became known that it is planned to launch an innovative development - an anti-icing eco-reagent. QSmartAntiGlaze, created in Kazakhstan, retains its properties even at extreme frosts and quickly melts ice. The reagent does not corrode road pavement and car tires, and is safe for human health and the environment.

In addition, a few months ago, testing of wire guardrails - a novelty for our republic - began on a section of one of the republican highways. According to experts of “KazdorNII”, wire guardrails have a significant advantage over traditional metal barriers-curve bars, as they allow snow to freely pass through the cables, preventing its accumulation on the dividing lanes and shoulders, reducing the risk of skidding and improving visibility for drivers.

In conclusion, it should be added that from the beginning of 2025, a document requiring the safety assessment of highways even before their construction or reconstruction came into force. The Code of Rules "Procedures for road safety on highways ” was developed by specialists of KazdorNII. It is known that the document fixed such concepts as “detailed analysis of road accidents” and “road safety inspection”. The rules, now applied in pilot mode, may become mandatory for implementation in the future.
