Kazakhstan's first mobile road safety laboratory is now up and running

Kazakhstan's first mobile laboratory (ML) is now working to help inspect roads using modern technology.

The unique mobile complex was introduced by KazdorNII JSC and is the only tool in Kazakhstan capable of comprehensively assessing road conditions and preventing accidents.

The new laboratory is a vehicle equipped with digital measuring instruments, sensors, and a system for analyzing technical parameters of the road. This allows the ML to quickly identify potentially dangerous sections and make informed recommendations for their elimination.

"This is the first complex of its kind in Kazakhstan. It allows road inspections to be carried out at a completely new level – quickly, accurately and using digital technologies. We are talking about a transition from visual inspections to objective, instrumental safety assessments," commented Andrey Chzhen, Director of the Department of Regulatory and Technical Support and Road Safety at KazdorNII.

The mobile laboratory is capable of assessing the condition of road pavement, including determining longitudinal slopes and the coefficient of friction, analyzing markings, road signs, lighting, geometric control of road infrastructure, generate digital reports linked to GPS coordinates, automatically record deviations, and compile cartographic analyses.

A distinctive feature of this initiative is its practical focus: the laboratory is becoming not just a technical tool, but a full-fledged instrument for systematic road safety auditing and inspection. This is a qualitatively new stage – a transition from sporadic checks to regular, scientifically based diagnostics capable of identifying potential risks before accidents occur.

The new technology has become part of the program for the digitalization of the industry and scientific support for transport projects. In the future, the laboratory will be used for regular inspections of roads of republican and regional significance, as well as during the design and acceptance phases of new facilities.

“The main thing in this project is not just technology, but a change in approach. We are talking about systematic diagnostics, where each recommendation is based on accurate measurements. This is a transition to science-based traffic safety management,” emphasized Andrey Chen.

The appearance of the first mobile laboratory in Kazakhstan brings the country to the level of advanced countries, where road safety is ensured on the basis of digital data and automated inspections. In the future, this will open up opportunities for the creation of a Unified Base and the introduction of intelligent road safety management systems.
