"The use of BIM models in road construction significantly reforms the industry," says Gulnaz Taibekova, head of KazdorNII Design and Safety Department
To date, in Kazakhstan, as in many other countries, there are clear problems with the use of BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology in the road sector. In fact, BIM is a comprehensive information model with digital data on construction project, which is updated throughout the "life cycle" of the project including design, construction, operation, repair, reconstruction, up to demolition, dismantling or decommissioning.
At the design stage, the BIM model simplifies the interaction and collaboration of all sections of the project.
In the construction stage, the BIM model can be easily augmented by the builders because it is more visual than individual drawings.
At the operation stage, the BIM model contains detailed information about all elements and structures on the road and is supplemented with defects and breakdowns that have occurred.
In the future, during the overhaul or reconstruction of the facility, BIM model with all the additions made to it will serve as the basis and input data for the designer.
"The obvious advantages of this BIM model for the Employer is that the Employer can fully "transparently" receive information about the object and manage the object at all stages of its "life cycle". For example, at the design stage or feasibility study stage, when approving design decisions, the 3D model will provide the Employer with more detailed and clear information on the future construction site than the consideration of individual 2D drawings scattered across different design sections," says Gulnaz Taibekova, head of KazdorNII Design and Safety Department.
At the construction stage, the digital three-dimensional model will also give the Employer a clearer view of all the stages and phases of work. The same is during the operation of the facility, when the operating organization supplements the digital model with the defects occurred, the Employer can optimize the distribution of repair work. All this makes it possible to avoid unnecessary costs during construction in case of errors in design, omission of any types of work during construction and to manage repair work more effectively, there is a transparency of construction and repair processes, especially in case of using automated control systems for road construction machines. Thus, road design using BIM-technology is one of the chains of three-dimensional information modeling together with construction and operation. To date, BIM-technologies are actively used in road construction in European countries and the United States, as well as implemented in countries where the road construction industry is developing dynamically, including China and the Russian Federation.
"KazdorNII" JSC within the promotion of innovative technologies will take the first, but very important steps for the further successful development of BIM-technologies to introduce changes in the principles of design and working documentation in the form of information models on the example of a single detailed design of a road.
