Testing of wire guardrail has started in Karaganda region on one of the most snow-covered sections of the republican highway "Yekaterinburg-Almaty". The project is being implemented with scientific and technical support of scientists and experts from KazdorNII.
The experimental installation of a new type of road guardrail for Kazakhstan has been approved by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was carried out near Temirtau on a 500-meter experimental section.
The wire guardrail mounted on the dividing strip and the right lane (in the direction of Karaganda) has a significant advantage over traditional metal barriers-curvebars.
Specifically, it does not obstruct the passage of snow and protects reliably from head-on collisions. This particular type is successfully utilized in theUSA, Japan and Europe due to its efficiency and affordability. As part of the project, KazdorNII specialists monitor the compliance with technical parameters during the installation of guardrails. However, the main goal of the scientific and technical support is to monitor the effectiveness of the wire guardrails over a two-year period.
"We will observe how the guardrails perform at ensuring traffic safety and preventing snow accumulation during heavy snowfalls and wind. The results of the observations will help assess the feasibility of mass adoption of wire guardrails on snow-covered sections throughout Kazakhstan. In two years, we will submit a final report with our recommendations,"said Andrey Chzhen, Director of the Department of Standardization at KazdorNII.
If the tests show positive results, the specialists will be able to recommend replacing traditional metal barriers with W-shaped sections with wire guardrails on snow-covered sections.
