Specialists have started creating 3D models of bridges on republican highways

Specialists of KazdorNII started approbation of a new technology of creating highly detailed digital models of bridge structures using LiDAR and photogrammetry.

This methodology significantly accelerates the processes of inspection and diagnosis of bridges and makes it possible to create three-dimensional digital models that allow engineers to make measurements with high accuracy, analyze the condition of structures and predict their durability. Another notable advantage of the technology is the availability of 3D digital models. Now, bridge specialists will no longer need to make repeated visits if they need to further study the object.

The initial results of the approbation fully met expectations: the created models revealed all the necessary parameters to analyze the condition of the bridges, providing detailed data for further work.

"Digital solutions represent the future of engineering, allowing us to effectively manage infrastructure facilities and identify potential challenges in a timely manner. We see the significant potential of the technology using LiDAR and photogrammetry to improve the quality of road infrastructure in Kazakhstan, “notes Kaisar Shalkar, Head of the Bridges Department at KazdorNII JSC.

It is important to note that the created 3D models will be integrated into the Bridge Operation Management System developed by the Institute, which in the near future will allow the bridge operation management to create full-fledged digital doubles of all road infrastructure objects in Kazakhstan, down to ancient wooden and metal ones.

Bridge operation management system tested at the Research Institute allows storing not only 3D models of bridge structures, but also an extensive set of data on each object. The EMS contains data on the last survey, geodetic survey results, passport data, as well as historical information, including design documentation (DED), executive documentation on repairs and other important information. This integrated approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the condition and operational history of each bridge.

Bridge structures are strategically important facilities, and their detailed inspection using modern digital technologies accelerates the creation of a unified digital road database. In the future, this database will be used to quickly assess the ability of large cargoes to pass through, which in turn contributes to the development of the country's logistics potential and strengthens its transport infrastructure.
